Licensed Tick Control Backed by Nearly 30 Years Serving North Alabama
Ticks are a real and recurring problem across North Alabama, and the warm, humid climate around Huntsville keeps them active from spring through early fall. Superior Services has handled outdoor pest control in this region since 1996, and our team holds Alabama state certification in ornamental and turf pest control (OTPS), the license that specifically covers pest treatment on turf and landscaped areas. We serve residential, commercial, and industrial properties throughout Huntsville and the surrounding communities.

Why Tick Pressure Stays High Around Huntsville Properties
North Alabama’s combination of warm temperatures, seasonal humidity, and fast-growing vegetation creates extended favorable conditions for ticks. Properties with wooded borders, shaded lawn edges, fence lines, leaf litter, or areas where pets move through tend to see the most sustained activity. Ticks don’t spread evenly across a yard. They concentrate in transition zones where open lawn meets brush, thicker growth, or natural cover.
For most households, the first sign of a problem is finding a tick on a pet or on clothing after time outside. Pets, children, and adults who use outdoor spaces regularly are all at risk of exposure. Yard-focused treatment is the practical first line of defense.
How We Approach Tick Control
We don’t apply a standard package to every property. Each tick control plan starts with identifying where activity is most likely to concentrate on that specific yard: shaded edges, tall grass near borders, fence lines, dense landscape beds, pet areas, and wooded property margins. Treatment focuses on those zones rather than blanketing the entire lawn uniformly.
Treatment options we offer:
Targeted perimeter treatment: Applications concentrate on the zones that create the most exposure around outdoor living areas, including patios, play areas, pet spaces, and lawn edges.
Recurring seasonal service: Ongoing service as weather, vegetation growth, and wildlife activity continue to shift conditions through the season.
One-time treatment: A practical option when a single area has become a hotspot or before a property starts being used more heavily.
Green product options: Available for property owners who prefer them.
Because we provide both pest control and lawn care, tick treatment can be coordinated with an existing turf program under one provider.
Why Huntsville Property Owners Choose Superior Services
Nearly three decades of serving North Alabama means we understand how local conditions drive pest activity season to season. Our OTPS state certification covers exactly the kind of outdoor treatment this work requires, and our track record in the community has earned recognition in The Decatur Daily’s Best of the Best Reader’s Choice Poll.
We communicate clearly about what we’re doing and why, respond promptly when questions come up, and follow up to make sure our customers are satisfied. Every plan is built for the specific property in front of us, not pulled from a shelf.

Ticks Found in North Alabama and the Diseases They Carry
Three tick species are most commonly encountered in the Huntsville area. Understanding which ticks are active and what they can transmit helps property owners recognize why yard-level prevention matters. If you have specific health concerns about tick-borne illness, consult a physician.
Lone Star Tick
The Lone Star tick is the most common tick species in Alabama. Unlike most ticks that wait passively for a host to pass by, it actively pursues hosts and is found primarily in hardwood stands and wooded yard edges. It can transmit spotted fever diseases, ehrlichiosis, tick paralysis, Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), and is linked to alpha-gal syndrome, an acquired red meat allergy that can result from the tick’s bite.
American Dog Tick
Common in backyards with green lawns near wooded areas, the American dog tick is a primary carrier of spotted fever rickettsiosis, the most commonly reported tick-borne illness in Alabama according to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle pain, and a spotted rash, and the illness can be serious if not treated promptly by a medical professional.
Black-Legged Tick
Also known as the deer tick, the black-legged tick is present in Alabama and can transmit Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. No vaccination against Lyme disease currently exists for humans, which makes prevention and prompt medical attention important after a potential exposure.
Where Ticks Hide in Huntsville Yards
Ticks are most commonly found in tall grass, brush, leaf piles, wood piles, shaded lawn edges, fence lines, landscape beds, under decks, around sheds, near wooded property borders, and in pet activity areas. The transition zone where maintained lawn meets thicker natural growth is where tick pressure tends to concentrate.
Habits that reduce tick activity between professional treatments:
Keep grass mowed and trim trees and shrubs to reduce dense shade.
Remove leaf and wood piles from areas near the home.
Maintain and regularly check pet activity areas.
Check pets thoroughly after time outdoors and discourage wildlife activity near the home.
When spending time near tick-prone areas, wear long pants and sleeves and use EPA-registered repellents containing DEET on exposed skin.
Treat clothing with permethrin-based products before outdoor activity in wooded or brushy areas.
After coming indoors, check clothing, gear, and pets carefully for attached ticks before entering living areas.
